My boyfriend turned 20 recently and I decided to plan a whole day of surprises just for him :) One of them was making "Settlers of Catan Cupcakes" as his birthday cake because we LOVE playing Catan and all its expansion packs. Let me just say, I couldn't have done it without my friends who helped me decorate these yummy cupcakes.

Here's the website we followed for decorations:

Here's what I did that "differed" from the website above
  • made 24 Red Velvet Cupcakes because most pre-made cake mixes make 24 cupcakes
    • 19 of them were used to make the resource cupcakes and the desert
    • 4 of them were used to make ports
    • 1 of them was used as an extra cupcake JUST IN CASE we screwed up one of the cupcakes
    • we didn't make any "water" cupcakes because we thought that was too boring LOL
  • decorations:
    • All cupcakes had Vanilla Icing and we just added colour dyes for the different coloured backgrounds
    • Ore = Oreo crumbs
    • Wheat  = Pecans that were chopped in half
    • Brick = Nibs
    • Sheep = Marshmallows
    • Wood = Rold Gold Pretzel Sticks
      • you should cut the sticks into halves so it would fit better onto the cupcake
      • we personally wanted to make it look like a campfire for some reason LOL
    • Desert = Crushed Graham Cracker Crumbs
      • for the robber, we used a candle since it was his birthday :)
    • Ports = Pretzel Sticks put in the shape of numbers
Tips
  • when baking the cupcakes, make sure you fill each cupcake tin 4/5 high
    • this will guarantee that your cupcakes will have a nice surface perfect for icing and decorating
  • let the cupcakes cool for at least 2 hours so the icing won't melt
  • after icing and decorating, make sure you refrigerate it so that the icing won't "run down" the cupcakes at room temperature thus also making sure the decorations won't fall
  • when putting the Oreo or Graham Cracker Crumbs onto the cupcake, it's easier to just place the crumbs onto a plate and dip the iced cupcakes into the crumbs instead of sprinkling them on
This was a really fun project to do! Any Catan fan would have fun making these cupcakes and of course eating them! YOU SHOULD TRY IT :)
